Fatal chuck design flaw! DeWalt made good.

Attached below is the original one-star review I wrote. I pursued the issue I raised with DeWalt and finally got to someone who ran the problem down and told me that this was a known factory issue and the drill would be repaired gratis. Which it was.So I change my review to 4 stars. This is in all respects but one a great drill. Now that DeWalt has repaired my unit, I can change my rating.Original review: This drill would be a first-rate tool, but suffers from a fatal design flaw. The chuck is keyless – you just twist to tighten it, then twist in the opposite direction to loosen the grip on your bit.Yes, it’s more efficient than the old keyed chuck in terms of quick-changing bits, but the new system introduces a a great propensity to fail and – this is the simply unforgivable part – DeWalt has made it next to impossible to get at the chuck to replace it. You have to – completely – disassemble the tool and use a torch to get the chuck free.Worse still, DeWalt’s “3-year warrantee” isn’t a 3-year warrantee, no matter what you read in their manual. The actual defect warrantee is 1 year, and the chuck problem is considered normal wear and tear.I’m a retiree who used the tool very lightly for 2 years. Now the chuck is toast and I have a ≈ $250 door stop to show for my investment. This is a case of a really poor design decision being taken out of the hide of the consumer. It has really shaken my faith in DeWalt’s judgment.

    Really good torque

I liked how easy it was driving screws in. I used my new hammer drill to build a medium size dog house and it was a whole lot easier driving in screws through . No hammering nails!

  4. Nick Mott

    This drill has serious power

Great product form dewalt.Drills with auger, spade, forstner, and standard drill bits with ease.Sends 3-4 inch screws in with ease.Perfect drill.Buy this, and choose not to use the hammer function, instead of a drill that’s not as strong

    Super versatile cordless drill

For a lot of people, this may be a little too big, but if you have big hands or just don’t mind holding a bigger tool, then this the drill is for you. The thing that is great about this one is that it does pretty much anything you would need a drill to do. It works great as a hammer drill for holes in masonry. Cordless hammer drills have really come a long way, but this is by far the best that I’ve used. It just has so much power. It will drill through most wood with ease. The low speed high torque mode is awesome for driving screws. I could get away with this being the only drill I had if I really wanted to. This thing really is the Mac daddy drill. I love it.

Great for drilling concrete and all-around drill/driver. Nice work DeWalt!

I bought this for the hammer mode for drilling concrete. I used to drill several 1/4″ holes 2 inches deep in 50 year old (hard) concrete. Each hole took less than a minute (it would take hours without the hammer mode). I’ve got the small 2 AH batteries, drilled 5 holes with power to spare. Love the LED in the base which lights up the drill point without shadows. The LED also has a ‘work light’ mode where it will stay on for 20 minutes to light up your work space. Also has screwdriver with adjustable clutch, non-hammer drill modes, variable speed, 3 gears for controlling torque vs. drill speed. 1 year maintenance warranty (meaning that if you wear it out they will repair it) , and 3 year manufacturer warranty (for defects). Nice work DeWalt. Tip on drilling concrete: push down just hard enough to keep the bit from bouncing and increase speed until you see concrete dust flowing out of the hole. If dust is not flying then maybe you are not drilling fast enough. If you get it right the bit will not overheat.

    Dewalt at again!

I was impressed by this baby! having used a drill hammer with a cord and now using this cordless one it did the job and had battery life to spare. I drilled some hole on stucco and it had no problems, it sustained its power, I though I would have to charge it to finish the job but that was not the case…as usual Dewalt does not disappoint me

Bought this as a Birthday present for my Brother to replace his original driver.

My Brother’s original cheap cordless DeWalt drill destroyed it’s chuck gearing and doesn’t work any longer. I already have one of these units, and being a Hammer Drill it should be a good bit more durable, and being brushless it will run longer on the batteries. We both have a bunch of DeWalt cordless tools that we use on a regular basis.

    What?

Overall I am SUPER impressed with this drill… WOULD buy again, WOULD recommend. When I opened the box and took the drill out… the chuck fell out. What!? I am very mechanically inclined so it was no real bother reinstalling the chuck. I did it before on a drill years ago so this was no big deal… still.. I am dinging it by one star due to this fact.

    Workhorse Drill

This drill has served me through furniture restoration, game cabinet installs, repair and maintenance work at my day job and general house work. Enough power with the right bit to drill through metal and goes through everything else like it’s butter. It is a heavier drill than its compact counterparts but the power upgrade is well worth it. If you belt carry make sure you you use a proper tool or riggers belt and holster. When combined with the right carrying equipment the weight isn’t an issue which is what most people end up griping about. Do it right before you make complaints people.

    Good value.

Good tool so far. Lots of power and torque. I bought this to replace an older 18v non-brushless Dewalt hammer drill and I’m happy with the upgrade. I bought the bare tool and paired it with generic batteries and charger for about the quarter of the price. Seems like a good deal all around. I almost bought a refurbished one but decided to go with new. But with the refurbished tool being under $100. You could get a charger with two batteries for the price of the this bare tool if you went that route.

Perfect Affordable Tool for Kdrill Ice Auger

The media could not be loaded.

I’d give it 6 stars if I couldThis exceeds the minimum specs for the Kdrilland I’m sure othersThis was only 6 inches of ice so it went fastI retired my gas auger after 41 years of not a single problemAt 62 I needed a light, efficient new setupThis is it.There are so many option of different augers, different hand Drills that it’s hard to pick oneIt’s not cheap after buying the auger, drill, and batteries. I matched my home drill brand so I have the same brand batteries for both toolsI’ve probably drilled 125 holes in the last few weeks. FantasticCouple notes-it comes with a removal hold back handle. Use it!!!The drill will occasionally “catch” while drillingNo problem with 2 handles. Don’t try it with just using the trigger grip. It will sprain the hell out of your wrists Trust me

Perfect for replacement due to accidental damage

I work for a utility company in which I have to put this drill through it’s paces. I regularly use this drill to drill through utility poles, metal enclosures, etc. and this drill does it all with ease. The company I work for was kind enough to provide me with this drill, however I work in a bucket truck and out of, for lack of better word, carelessness, I dropped my drill from about 20 feet in the air onto a concrete sidewalk. Obviously the drill didn’t fair well, and it’d be absurd to expect it to, but the drill landed on its top and pretty much destroyed the upper portion of the drill. After some careful inspection, the battery looked to still be undamaged, the charge indicator still worked and there wasn’t a single scratch on it. So rather than going through the hassle of getting a payroll deduction through work and having to deal with all the paperwork involved in getting it replaced through work, I decided to buy this. I had no problem buying it here considering it was 100% my fault the drill broke in the first place, plus I knew it’d be faster and less of a hassle. Since the battery was still functional and intact, all I needed to buy was the bare tool. Once I found the exact model I needed, I ordered it and two days later it’s at my door. I could not have asked for a better experience seller wise, and the drill performs the exact same as the old one. I’d give my full recommendation to anyone facing a similar situation.

This is what dewalt used to be!!

I used to be a strong dewalt supporter but over the years almost all their product has turned to complete garbage… Thankfully so far, this is one tool of theirs that has held up and done a great job.It has tremendous power basically at all speeds..Battery life is reasonable using a 6ah battery. The tool seems to be well built and I do like the brushless motor. The keyless chuck holds and locks better than most in the industry and releases when I want it to.Little features like the led light actually are bright enough to be useful. The hammer drill selection actually provides a nice solid action with enough force to power thru hard concrete slab fairly easily.Over all this has been one of the best dewalt tools I have used or purchased in a long time.

Powerful hammer drill for the money

This is my third DeWalt 1/2 cordless hammer drill. First was a 18 volt. It was great, but when I wore it out…..the first 20 volt was even better. It’s still kicking, but I know that this was the time to replace it.DeWalt has been very good to me. This drill is more efficient battery wise, but I haven’t run it enough to truly have an opinion. I’m fixing to mix up about 70 bags of thinset on a job, and I’ll know more then. I’ve drilled out studs on a topout for Plumbing, and mixed a lot of thinset with my first one. An important thing to note is the metal parts in the drive gear. It just makes a sturdier drill, imo. 4 amp batteries have worked just fine, and I expect the same this time as well.Milwaukee makes great equipment, no doubt. But DeWalt was making better deals, even though they focus more on Carpenters than Plumbers. I’m sure I would have been happy with their equipment. But, the fact is this….you buy into a system…. batteries and all. I just buy the bare tool, and that saves some money. It’s late February 2019…..it mixes thinset like a champ…..best use the handle. Better, more efficient brushless motor. 4 amp batteries are great. Btw, I’m still running my 4 amp batteries 5 years or so now.

    Strong driver

This is a great drill for novice or professionals, but I would highly suggest upgrading to at least 4.0 ahr battery to maximize use.I would absolutely recommend the XR line over the Atomic line.

  29. Ryan Williams

It’s not an SDS but it’s about as good as it gets otherwise

It’s almost confusing to me how many different models DeWalt has of basically the same drills. I used to think this one was basically just like the brushless XR driver I have but with a hammer setting but it’s much bigger and the chuck/housing looks more substantial. Makes sense if it’s going to be hammering all the time I guess. This drill has a different distinctive torque adjustment that gives loud and crisp clicks and the tightening of the chuck is also improved over the regular XR I own to where there are more definitive clicks there as well. When using the hammer function it kind of reminds me of a Bosch of about the same size that has the hammer/drill functions. This thing is a beast and for the price I couldn’t resist. I had to decide between spending a little more on a legit SDS and toting that around on ladders or getting away with a hammer drill that I could also use for driving. This won’t put holes through masonry like an SDS will but it will still get it done much better than trying to use a regular drill or an impact like a jackass. It also has the power to do some serious drilling in other material.

Dewalt’s 20V Max XR line of tools is a great option for those who want to completely cut the cord.In addition to the DCD996 you’re looking at here, I also have the hammer drill, circular saw, sawzall, and grinder. All are great tools, and I cannot really think of any serious complaints. Dewalt makes pretty bold claims in terms of what you will get from the battery life. I’m sure you’re savvy enough to realize that “real world results vary.” That being said, the batteries really do last a long time. For example, on the DCD996, which I keep inside as a go-to household chores drill, I will charge the battery every 3 to 6 months with only low to moderate use. If your use is less, the packs stay energetic much longer. With all of the various tools in this line that I own, I have quite a few of these battery packs available. As a result, I have never had a situation where I needed to use a tool, but lacked a charged battery pack. Additionally, the charging time ranges from fast to relatively quick depending on whether you fully deplete the battery or not.Power-wise, I have yet to undertake a task where a tool in the 20V Max XR line felt underpowered. Some, like the sawzall, are as robust as any corded tool that I have used.

    Another quality dewalt tool

Got this as an upgrade to my DCD780C2, and man “upgrade” is the right word for it.Hammer drill function works great, have been using this drill to plow through concrete and stucco for mounting cameras and other equipment. I even had to drill a 3/4″ hole through 8″ of solid concrete and the drill had no problems (didn’t know the wall was that thick or solid concrete and thus did not start with the right bit for the job, but hardly the drills fault).Brushless design gives me noticeably more speed and output over the 780The improved LED light design is great, 3 levels of brightness, and the last level is on until you manually switch it off. The light is also at a better angle for most jobs. The only con about this (besides wishing I could get something this good for even cheaper) is that with all of its extra functionality it is noticeably heavier than my DCD780.FYI if the title and picture was not a big enough of a hint, this does not include a battery or a charger.

    Yellow and Black awesomeness

The vendor did a great job, shipped quickly and securely. This hammerdrill is fantastic. The ergonomics are superb. It feels solid in the hand and is well balanced. Am using in with 3 and 4 amp batteries. The light setup is novel and effective, the bright setting is VERY bright and the dark setting is still more than sufficient to illuminate a work area. This is my 4th DeWalt hammerdrill. The first one was a 12 volt, and that really was not enough power in the long run. The next on was an 18 volt and I was still using it until last week. The third is a 20v brushed motor versionThe pairing of the “20v” lithium ion batteries with the brushless motor is producing the best performing tool yet. It screws, hammerdrills and drills extremely well…not sure how it can get any better. The “US assembled of foreign components” is the cherry on top….hard to find a 100% US electric tool anymore, but US assembled is very much a step in the right direction….Happy to say DeWalt got this right across the board, there is nothing I would change.

this drill Is dewalts biggest baddest offering for it 20 v line up.Never had a dewalt branded tool before so this was my first.I bought the drill as a bare tool along with an impact driver with 2 4ah battery. The hammer drill is of “us manufacture” whereas the impact driver is made in China.Looking at both tools no visible differences in appearance nor any sign to indicate difference in quality.I used both tools to assemble 2 locks in a pine door.Drill worked well, felt balanced powerful yet lighter than an 18 v model I looked at in a local store.Impact driver only used it for 8 screws in total for the job and again it worked well. Both tools had great lighting from the built in leds. Why 4 stars?1> I don’t like the F/R switch on the hammer drill, feels cheesy I compared it to its Chinese impact driver and its switch feels solid. Will it fail prematurely?dont know only time will tell.2> battery fits a bit loose, again this is no indication the tool will fail but holding in your hand with a sudden motion you can feel the bat/pack wobble.

    Do not buy

Big problem here is an inferior chuck design. Mine is 3 mos old and chuck jammed constantly until, finally, it had to be replaced. Dewalt designed this drill to be tossed out when the chuck dies. What I mean is the drill must be completely disassembled to replace the chuck and whereas Dewalt could have made a simple design where you take out a single screw inside the end of the chuck. Instead they designed a chuck drive shaft that is shrink fitted to its housing. To get it loose you need a torch and a hammer. Point is the average handy person cannot replace the chuck. You toss it out or take it to the repair center for an expensive fix. I own two of these and just changed the chuck on the older one for the second time and the newer one for the first time. I would never entertain purchasing another one of these. Don’t believe me check out Dewalt chuck jamming or chuck replacement on youtube. Apart from the chuck this drill works well but is a workshop tool and should not be used for heavy drilling or where you are creating a lot of dust which will cause the chuck to freeze. Look for another brand and Dewalt do a redesign on the chuck.

As usual, DeWalt is my go-to power tool choice and this one’s great.

I bought this to replace the one I bought in 2013! It seems that the brushes in it may be going bad and since I can’t be without a drill/driver, I got this tool only. It fits in my hard case but I can’t have a battery on it or it won’t fit, little taller than the original. If I got a 2 AH battery, it would be fine. It seems to work well, three speed, not heavy and brushless means batteries last longer between charges.

    Tons of Torque and Control

This thing has enough torque to hurt you if you’re not paying attention. However, the clutch is great and even stops the drill. The hammer function drills into cement easily and doubles as an impact wrench.

    Favorite Drill to Date

My 18V Dewalt drill kicked the bucket after about five years, so it was time for a new one. I decided to go with what seems to be Dewalt’s top of the line 20V drill, I even decided to get the one which has the hammer option. There seems to be a ton of different options, although I think I picked the newest model. I always see the XR type drills at work (industrial construction), so I went for it.I am so very happy with this drill, it is probably the best drill I have ever used. It is a little bigger than my previous drill and the basic 20V drill I have, but that is expected being an XR drill with hammer option. It is definitely more heavy duty than other drills (including Dewalt) I have used. The chuck is better, it is all metal instead of some plastic/rubber on previous models I have used. Most likely because of the hammer function. The drill fits perfectly in my hand and is very well balanced, quite easy to use and maneuver around. I put the little belt clip on also, very handy for going up and down ladders. This is the first drill I’ve actually had this on, now I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to live without it.I have only used a 2AH battery and get plenty of use from it, although I have not used the hammer function. I actually have a Dewalt corded hammer drill, it will be interesting to compare the two if I ever can. My use has been small and large screws, drilling in wood and metal up to a 4″ hole saw through wood. Everything worked great and I varied the use between the three gears, so each has its own benefits.I read the other reviews about the drill failing and poor quality compared to previous units, hopefully the couple at the top of the review log are not common occurrences. Time will tell, but right now I am very happy with the drill.

    DCD996 Hammer Drill

**Update: Monster, Powerful and Right Now Torque. If you have ever gotten into serious drilling than you have to experience it with this drill. The instantaneous torque of the drill helps get work done faster. I have never had to back out of wood, concrete or steel. You must: I Mean must use good bits or this drill will snap them or turn them into a smooth reed. Also as you use it continually the drill does not heat up like other drills I have used in the past…. I’m looking at you Milwaukee.I have used this drill and would still give it my rating to pros and handymen alike. The others post high numbers but this drill beats them all. Add the new dcb606 and 609 battery series and you will have all the power you will need in your hand. USA Built.Bought this drill for weekly work as an installer. I also have a DCD791 for drilling and fastening. This drill is the most powerful non-corded drill I have ever used. It is similar to the Milwaukee M18 2nd gen but in my opinion the torque from this drill is more immediate and when you get into deep holes in masonry this powers through it faster. I am so impressed with this new hammer drill from Dewalt. As someone that relies on speed to get things done this drill has been amazing. I just finished hammer drilling approximately 75+ holes in concrete and cinderblock with a 5ah battery no problem. Still had 2 of 3 bars showing at the end of my day.A warning: This drill has enough torque that if you are not completely focused on the task you are doing it will wrench itself out of your hand. Also in hammer mode this thing is extremely loud in closed bathrooms and electrical rooms where echoing occurs. I would recommend ear muffs for anyone doing drilling for more than a few holes.Another thing to note is how little heat is generated when continually using the drill. I believe this will play well with the longevity of this power tool.Last thing, the ergonomics of the drill in your hand is spot on. It is well balanced and very comfortable to work with all day. Vibrations are minimal for a drill with this much power. I believe this tool is A+ for professionals.Pro’sAbsolute Power House, Torque in all 3 Speeds, Hammer Drill Mode is excellent, Great Metal Chuck, LED light is best in classCon’sForward and Reverse button needs refinement, 3 Speed Selector sometimes sticks

    Good tools from DeWalt

I have standardized on DeWalt tools for my shop. Am very happy with them overall but would always recommend that other buyers go for the XR brushless versions. The tool quality is just way better than those DIY sets where you can get 9 tools for $500. When it comes to work tools, spend the extra because you get what you pay for. I bought (by mistake) one of those 9 pc sets recently and immediately returned it because the motors were clunky when you ran the tools and they smelled like burning electrical (i.e. the motors were not lined up well). DeWalt was pretty good about swapping out the tools for a 5 pc set of XR with no cost increase and tossed in a right angle drill (XR of course). So happy with how the manufacturer dealt with the situation.

    Almost too good

This thing is so powerful it’s almost stupid. Effortless drilling into concrete for tapcon screws and great for every day use. In terms of raw power, I used it recently to mix concrete for deck footings. I poured 2x 80lb bags of concrete mix in 10”x3’ deep holes filled ~1/3 with water. I slapped a huge mixing bit on this and it cranked my wrists more than I could imagine. Finally held it like a man, and it tore right through the concrete mix and blended each hole in under 30 seconds. I thought the drill would burn out at some point but it never even got hot. Unbelievable product. If you’re on the fence about it, just know this is the last drill you’ll ever need again.

    Full success for drilling concrete

This Dewalt hammer drill was perfect for a few projects recently. I used a 1.5″ diamond-tip core bit to drill a 6″ deep hole in a home foundation so we could run a gas line outside for a fire pit. We probably spent 25-30 minutes drilling that hole, but the buzzing hammer effect made it go quite quickly (not my first hole). On a separate project, we drilled eight 3/8″x5″ holes into a home foundation using a carbide bit. The gearbox got a bit warm but the hammer drill again made this go quite quickly. It’s good to have a bigger battery around for jobs that take more than 10-15 mins.

    Works great for ice fishing!

This is a powerful drill for putting holes into the ice. More than capable of drilling 8 inch ice holes into the ice. I’ve used it on ice that is 16 inches thick and as long as your blades are sharp, your gonna have a hole within 15 seconds, guaranteed! Then another and another and another!oh and it also makes a pretty decent drill for those other things most people use drills for! HA!

    This is a beast!!

I replaced a lesser powerful drill with this hammer drill and the first time using it reminded me that you wear gloves when changing out a driver bit as it “ground down” my finger prints! It was my fault as I was used to just grabbing knurled ring on weaker drill and hitting the trigger. Will be more careful next time. But works great and love the adjustable work light that allows to used as a full time flashlight as well as short term. It is heavier than other Dewalt drills for a reason. Great drill

This is an awesome tool! If you’re considering it, just buy it!

Some have questioned the quality of DeWalt tools since their acquisition by Stanley/Black & Decker. And to some degree, there may be justification for that with some of their products. But the DCD996 (and similar DC997) aren’t tools that make any significant compromises.I’ve only had mine for two months, but it’s doing a fantastic job. It’s very well built, feels great in the hand, and has tons of power. All while not being too heavy for what it is.Compared to other brands in the same price range, I think this drill represents a better value. And the reviews I read online before purchasing came to the same conclusion. There just isn’t a better drill in this price range. There are several great tools from other brands, but each has an omission of some kind, where the DCD996/997 are as good as it gets.

    Very nice drill!

Received this product today, and its everything I expected from a high end DeWALT and more! Even on the highest speed this thing belts out torque! Probably has more torque than my truck! The light is a great feature, it has three settings: low, medium, and high brightness with 20 min timer. The drill makes a great area light with the timer feature, PLUS it blinks and dims at 18 minutes to let you know time is almost up, but gives you time to get your hands free, a feature I was unaware of. On the high torque low speed setting, I decided to test the torque by attempting to stall the drill, DON’T DO THAT! I put a piece of 6″ long, 1/4″ thick mild steel rod and secured it, it twisted it like a piece of bubble gum, and about broke my wrist with the side handle installed! This has more power than most can handle, so beware. Docking a star since it has a spot for a depth control rod bit did not include one. At this price point, I shouldn’t have to purchase something that is so cheap for them to include. Besides that minor complaint, it’s hands down the nicest drill I’ve ever used!
